Expert Pet Dental Care
Often overlooked in the repertoire of veterinary care, pet dental procedures and regular teeth cleaning play an intrinsic role in keeping your pet healthy throughout his or her life and can even extend their lives up to 5 years. Our veterinarians offer superlative dental care for your beloved companion. Let us tell you more!
Value of Pet Dental Care
Just like with humans, if a pet's teeth are not well taken care of it can lead to serious and even catastrophic complications such as gum and periodontal disease. Worse yet is that unchecked oral bacteria can lead to serious and even life-threatening heart, kidney and liver diseases. These are preventable problems often seen by your veterinarian, when pets have not had proper, consistent dental care.
When Care Begins
Dental care for your pet begins when you come for that first wellness exam. No matter how old your pet is, we will perform a comprehensive visual examination of the mouth to check the condition of the teeth. This exam gives us a good idea of what we'll need to do when we perform the actual cleaning to rid the teeth of harmful plaque and tartar.
Teeth Cleaning
Most teeth cleaning is performed under anesthesia in order to keep your pet safe and comfortable as well as to allow our veterinarians to thoroughly examine, treat or perform any issues such as extractions or periodontal disease. In order to ensure your pet’s good dental health, we recommend scheduling your pet for an annual cleaning.
Teeth Cleaning Procedure
Before your pet undergoes the anesthesia, we prepare for the teeth cleaning procedure by performing an examination, perhaps including blood work, to ensure he or she is in good physical condition. If we find anything such as a heart murmur we may have to cancel the procedure. Once approved to proceed, we sedate your pet and insert an IV for fluids and medications necessary throughout the procedure. During the procedure, our veterinarian performs a tooth-by-tooth scaling and polishing, both above and below the gum line. Polishing is important because it prevents plaque from easily adhering to the teeth. For the entire time we vigilantly monitor your pet’s condition with the equipment in our ultra-modern surgical suite.
Your Pet Dental Role
Good pet dental care doesn’t end with a yearly cleaning by our veterinarians. At-home dental care is just as important. Invest in a toothbrush and toothpaste made just for pets and begin brushing your pet’s teeth daily. Buy good quality dental chew toys and treats. We can help you get started with brushing and recommend the best products to keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.
